Andretti eventually joined Lotus and won the 1978 world championship. His first F1 came on his Ferrari debut at the 1971 South African Grand Prix, while also winning various endurance races with co-driver Jacky Ickx. He drove sporadically in the series for the next four years with Lotus, March and Ferrari. That opportunity came in 1968 with Lotus. He also took his first pole at the Indianapolis 500, winning the race in 1969.Īlthough he competed in America, Andretti never hid his desire to race in Formula 1.
He won his first race, championship and Rookie of the Year Honours in 1965, and repeated as champion in 1966. It’s there that Andretti got into motosports, racing at the local track before making his debut in Ind圜ar in 1964. Born in Montona, Italy (now Croatia), Mario Andretti and his family left their home and lived in a refugee camp before moving to the USA in 1955.
